Driving Test Booking Changes in 2026

Can 5Day Book My Driving Test?

If you’re wondering whether 5Day can still book your practical driving test, the short answer is no. Following new DVSA rules introduced in 2026, learners now need to book their own test – but you can still rely on 5Day to guide you through the process and help you prepare with confidence.

In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what has changed, who is responsible for booking the practical driving test, and what support you can expect from the 5Day team throughout your learning journey. We’ll also clear up some common misconceptions about driving test preparation and booking, so you know exactly what to expect when you book a course with us.

What has changed for booking driving tests?

Until recently, intensive driving schools like 5Day could manage much of the practical driving test booking process on behalf of learners. This included sourcing available test appointments, booking tests and making changes to dates, times and centres where needed.

Under new DVSA rules introduced on 12 May 2026, practical driving tests can only be booked by the learner themselves.

Additionally, they’ve introduced rules around changes and test centres, so to make things simple, here’s a summary of everything before and now.

BEFORE
AFTER
Driving instructors and driving schools could book tests on behalf of learners
Learners must book their own practical driving test directly through the DVSA
Other people could manage, change or cancel a learner’s booking
Only the learner taking the test can book, change, swap or cancel their test
Learners could make up to 6 changes to a test booking
Learners can only make 2 changes to a booking
Tests could be moved to almost any test centre with availability
Tests can only be moved to the nearest 3 centres or original centre
Third-party booking and cancellation services could help find you a test quicker
Unofficial booking and cancellation services are no longer permitted

Why the change to driving test bookings?

The aim is to make the system fairer for everyone. By preventing automated software and third-party booking services from reserving large numbers of appointments, the DVSA hopes genuine learners will have a better chance of securing available tests at the official price. And, in time, this should reduce driving test wait times.

For years, some third-party companies and automated bots have been securing driving test appointments before genuine learners could even access them, often reselling those slots at hugely inflated prices. In some cases*, learners were paying up to £500 for a test that officially costs just £62 – making it far more difficult and expensive for genuine learners to access a driving test.

What does this mean for learners?

If you’re still here, you’ll hopefully know by now that you need to book your own practical driving test – and the good news is, it’s quick and easy to do online in just 10 minutes.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve created a step-by-step guide that walks you through the process from start to finish.

Remember, once your test is booked, you can now only make two changes to your booking. These include changing the date, time or test centre, swapping your appointment with someone else, or cancelling and rebooking. To be safe, we recommend only choosing a test centre you’re confident you can attend.

Of course, booking your own test is only one part of the picture. Many learners are also wondering how these changes might affect driving test availability and waiting times.

What do these changes mean for driving test waiting times?

This is probably one of the biggest questions learners have. We know these changes may feel like an extra step if you’re eager to get on the road, but they’re intended to improve how driving test appointments are allocated over time.

While the new rules won’t create more driving test appointments overnight, they should help ensure existing appointments are available to genuine learners by preventing bots and third-party services from reserving large numbers of test slots.

Over time, the aim is that more appointments will be available to genuine learners at the official DVSA price, making it easier to find a suitable test date without paying inflated fees to third-party booking services.

For learners choosing an intensive driving course, that’s particularly encouraging. The changes are intended to help ensure appointments are available to genuine learners rather than automated booking services.

While waiting times will still depend on demand in your area, these changes are a positive step towards a more accessible booking system for everyone.

Should I wait until I’ve booked my test before starting an intensive course?

It can be tempting to delay learning until you’ve secured a practical test appointment, but that isn’t always the best approach. For many learners, keeping up the momentum of regular lessons and topping them up with an intensive course can be more beneficial than waiting months to begin.

Learning to drive takes preparation, confidence and consistency. Starting your training now means you’ll be developing the skills you’ll need once a suitable test becomes available, rather than waiting months before getting behind the wheel.

As the new booking rules help create a fairer system, learners should be in a better position to secure genuine appointments when they’re ready.

How 5Day supports learners

Although learners are now responsible for booking their own practical driving test, they’ll still receive the same level of support from the 5Day team throughout their journey. From helping you understand when you’re ready for your test to guiding you through the booking process, our experienced instructors and dedicated customer support team are here to help every step of the way.

Here’s how 5Day supports every learner:

  • Dedicated customer support – Our friendly customer service team is on hand from start to finish to answer any questions you may have. You can reach us on 01603 616 909, Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm, and on bank holidays from 8am–12pm. Alternatively, email us at customerservices@5day.co.uk

  • Instructor matching – Every learner completes a short questionnaire before their course begins, allowing us to pair them with the instructor best suited to their experience, confidence level and learning style. It’s all about helping you feel confident behind the wheel from day one.

  • Theory test support – We provide comprehensive in-house theory training alongside your practical tuition, with your theory test organised and paid for by us. If you have any additional learning requirements, we’ll always do our best to accommodate them.

  • Flexible payment options – We understand that learning to drive can be a high cost for many people. That’s why we’ve recently introduced the option to pay for your 5Day course in three interest-free instalments with Klarna. It’s our way of helping to make learning to drive more accessible for everyone.

  • Booking guidance – While we can’t book your practical driving test on your behalf, we’ll help you understand the process, explain the new DVSA rules and make sure you’re ready to take the next step when the time comes.

Conclusion

Although the way practical driving tests are booked has changed, one thing hasn’t: our commitment to helping learners succeed. From expert tuition and theory support to guidance throughout the booking process, 5Day is here to help you move towards your driving test with confidence.

If you’re ready to start your driving journey, explore our intensive driving courses today and discover how 5Day can help you build the skills and confidence you need to pass.
